If you would never purchase a vehicle without test-driving it first, the same you will do with a riding lawnmower. A test drive won't only show how well the lawnmower cuts grass, but also allow you to see if it starts well. Stopping a riding lawnmower safely is as important as getting it moving, then check all the brakes during the test drive.
There is a distinction between a lawnmower which has been used often & the one which has been used hard. Wear signs and a bit of exfoliating paint aren't cause for concern, but large scratches, dents, and rust may show rough handling & a lack of good care. Pay attention to everything, including the engine and its tires.
